Hazardous Waste Rules and Regulations

  • York Region residents only (proof of residence is required).
  • There is no charge for this service.
  • No industrial, commercial and institutional electronics accepted.
  • Household appliances, power tools, electric motors and other scrap metal items are accepted at the East Gwillimbury and Georgina facilities only, at no charge.
  • People delivering yard waste in plastic bags and/or containers will be asked to empty them at the drop-off centre. Kraft paper yard waste bags do not have to be emptied.

The municipalities of Markham, Aurora, and Whitchurch-Stouffville, also operate their own recycling depots. Please click on the appropriate municipality to access information on acceptable materials, hours of operation, and depot locations.

York Region's Household Hazardous Waste Depots operate under Certificates of Approval from the Province of Ontario which restricts the quantities and types of materials that we can legally accept.

  1. York Region residents only (proof of residence is required).
  2. No commercial, industrial or medical office wastes accepted.
  3. No explosives (other than the above types), ammunition, PCBs, or radioactive wastes accepted.
  4. Needles and syringes from household medicinal use will be accepted in rigid containers only. No other pathological wastes will be accepted.
  5. Motor vehicle batteries and oil filters will also be accepted.
